This is a Structured Inquiry Quest designed for students who are beginning to develop note-taking skills. Students first work with a shared foundational article so the teacher can model how to identify important ideas and record notes. They then move through a deliberately sequenced set of articles that gradually asks them to apply those skills with increasing independence.
The Quest develops understanding through three connected areas: water use in food production, water use in manufacturing, and solutions and responses to water challenges. The sequence allows students to build background knowledge first and then make connections between water use, its consequences, and ways people have responded over time.
Begin with the shared foundational article and use it to model effective note-taking. Help students distinguish between important ideas and supporting details, and discourage copying full sentences from the text.
As students move into the three streams, Food Production, Manufacturing, and Water in the Past, gradually release responsibility. Students should continue taking notes, but with increasing independence as they become more confident identifying key ideas and making connections across articles.
Because this Quest is designed for students who are still learning how to take effective notes, consider involving specialists, learning support staff, librarians, or other available support teachers during the early stages of the Quest. Having additional adults in the room can make it easier to conference with students, model note-taking in small groups, and give targeted support without slowing the whole class down.
Encourage students to look for relationships between water use, its effects, and possible responses.

What solutions or responses have people developed?
Adjust the level of support as students become more independent. Some students may be ready to work through later articles with minimal help, while others may still benefit from guided practice, check-ins, or small-group support.
The Quest begins with a shared foundational article that introduces the broader role of water in people’s lives and establishes common background knowledge for the class.
Students then move through three connected article streams: Food Production, Manufacturing, and Water in the Past. The Food Production articles explore how water is used to grow and produce the food people eat. The Manufacturing articles examine how water is used to make everyday products and the effects that this use can have. The Water in the Past articles look at how people have managed, used and solved pollution problems with water in different times and places.
Together, the articles help students build a broader understanding of how people depend on water, how human water use can create challenges, and how different societies have responded to those challenges over time.
