The Muromachi period lasted from 1336 CE to 1573 CE and is also called the Ashikaga shogunate. The capital was in Kyoto. This period is known for both cultural growth and political instability.

Arts such as tea ceremonies, garden design, and ink painting developed during this time. At the same time, central government control weakened, and regional leaders gained more power.

A long period of conflict called the Sengoku period occurred within this era. The Muromachi period ended when new leaders took control of Japan.
