The Maurya period in India lasted from about 322 BCE to 185 BCE. It began when Chandragupta Maurya founded the Maurya Empire. This empire became one of the largest in ancient India.
The empire reached its peak under Emperor Ashoka around 250 BCE. It covered most of the Indian subcontinent and included a strong system of roads and administration. Stone pillars and inscriptions from Ashoka’s time have been found across the region.
During this period, Buddhism spread widely across Asia. The Maurya period is studied through inscriptions, archaeological sites, and historical texts.
