Great Zimbabwe was a city and kingdom in southern Africa from about 1100 CE to 1450 CE. It was located in what is now the country of Zimbabwe. The site is known for large stone buildings constructed without mortar.

Walls and towers were built using carefully shaped stones stacked together. The city was an important center for trade in gold and ivory with regions across Africa and beyond. Its population may have reached between 10,000 and 20,000 people.

Great Zimbabwe is an important archaeological site today. Its structures provide evidence of advanced building techniques and organized society.
