Aztec Empire

AZ-tek EM-py-ur

Aztec Empire existed in central Mexico from about 1300 CE to 1521 CE. Its capital city, Tenochtitlán, was built on an island in a large lake. The city had roads, canals, and bridges connecting different areas.

Farmers used chinampas, or floating gardens, to grow crops on the water. The empire collected goods from surrounding regions through a tribute system. Temples and public buildings stood at the center of the city.

The Aztec Empire ended in 1521 when Spanish forces captured Tenochtitlán. Its history is known from records, ruins, and archaeological findings.
