Inquessa Quests

Inquessa Quests are curated inquiry pathways designed to support different kinds of classroom research. Each Quest brings together connected Inquessa articles around a specific unit, topic, or inquiry path.

Not every inquiry needs the same amount of structure. Sometimes students need a carefully designed set of texts so instructional time can focus on skills such as notetaking, paraphrasing, synthesizing, and citing sources. At other times, students are ready to make more decisions about what to read, which sources are useful, and where their questions should lead.

Inquessa Quests are labeled by the type of inquiry they support so teachers can choose the structure that best fits their students and the goals of a unit.

Structured Inquiry Quest

Follow a carefully designed pathway.

The inquiry path and resources are largely provided, and articles may be placed in a recommended reading order. Structured Quests are especially useful when teachers want to focus instructional time on other parts of the research process, such as notetaking, identifying important information, paraphrasing, organizing ideas, synthesizing, or citing sources.

Guided Inquiry Quest

Make choices within a curated collection.

Students work within a focused pool of reliable resources while making choices about what they investigate and which texts they use. Teachers may ask students to read a set number of Inquessa articles and then gather information from additional trusted, age-appropriate sources. Guided Quests give students practice developing questions, selecting useful resources, comparing information, and making decisions about where their inquiry should go next.

Independent Inquiry Launch

Build knowledge, develop questions, and begin a wider investigation.

These Quests provide strong background knowledge designed to spark curiosity and help students develop meaningful research questions. Students then take greater responsibility for gathering and prioritizing sources for their investigation. This type of inquiry works best when students are also learning how to search effectively, refine search terms, evaluate reliability and relevance, organize a reading list, take notes across sources, and synthesize what they learn.

Researching vs Finding Out

Students have more ways than ever to find information quickly. The deeper work is learning how to question, evaluate, connect, and use that information thoughtfully.

What's the Difference? 

At Inquessa, we make an important distinction between finding out and researching.

Finding out means getting information quickly. A reference tool, a trusted website, or even an AI tool can sometimes help a student clarify an idea, confirm information, build background knowledge, or spark a new question. 

Researching goes further. Students gather information from multiple sources, decide what is relevant, evaluate reliability, compare ideas, notice connections and contradictions, ask new questions, and build their own understanding.

AI-generated answers are increasingly part of the digital environments students use. Regardless of how an individual school approaches AI, students need opportunities to learn when a quick answer is useful and when a question requires deeper investigation. AI can be useful for finding out, but researching requires students to work with information across multiple sources and build understanding for themselves.

The goal of research is not simply to find information. It is to develop the critical and creative thinking skills needed to question, evaluate, connect, and create with information.
