feudal Japan

FYOO-duhl juh-PAN

Feudal Japan refers to a system of government and society that lasted from about the 1100s to the 1800s. During this time, power was held by military leaders called shoguns rather than emperors. Local lords known as daimyo controlled land.

Society was divided into classes, including samurai warriors, farmers, artisans, and merchants. Samurai followed a code of conduct called bushido, which guided their behavior. Castles and fortified towns were common features.

This system was based on loyalty and service. Historical records, castles, and artifacts provide evidence of life during this period.
