The Gupta period in India lasted from about 320 CE to 550 CE. It is often called a “Golden Age” because of advances in knowledge and culture. This period followed earlier empires in the region.
Mathematicians developed ideas such as the concept of zero and improved number systems. Astronomy, medicine, and literature also grew during this time. Cities such as Pataliputra were important centers of learning.
Art and architecture flourished, including temples and sculptures. The period ended after invasions weakened the empire around 550 CE.
