Zhou period (China) lasted from about 1046 BCE to 256 BCE. It is the longest-lasting dynasty period in Chinese history. The Zhou rulers introduced the idea of the “Mandate of Heaven,” which explained a ruler’s right to govern.

This period is divided into the Western Zhou and Eastern Zhou. During the later part, known as the Warring States period, different regions competed for power. Important thinkers such as Confucius and Laozi lived during this time.

Archaeological sites and written records provide information about the Zhou period. It ended when the Qin state rose to power and unified China.
