VAY-dik PEER-ee-uhd (IN-dee-uh)

Vedic period (India) lasted from about 1500 BCE to 500 BCE. It is named after the Vedas, a collection of early religious texts. These texts were first shared orally before being written down.

People lived in northern India and organized into tribes and early kingdoms. Society included farmers, herders, and leaders. Early religious practices that later developed into Hindu traditions began during this time.

Knowledge of the Vedic period comes from texts and archaeological findings. It is an important part of early Indian history and culture.
