Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who sailed for Spain. In 1492, he led a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. His ships reached islands in the Caribbean region.

Columbus believed he had reached parts of Asia, but the lands were previously unknown to Europeans. He made four voyages between 1492 and 1504. His journeys began ongoing contact between Europe and the Americas.
